Just a little post to say, “I’m still here!” because I feel like if I don’t post for a week you might worry. It’s too easy for new mom not to shower or leave their house for a week, and rest assured, I am doing some of both.
I’m not starring in fashion shows or doing Valentine’s crafts — nothing particularly noteworthy.
Just getting out for walks on these sunny afternoons (that’s the baby, cuddled in my wraparound sweater in a carrier). Going to my new mom group and seeing friends and family. Napping.
How is the sleep, you ask? There are days like one night last week, when I was so sleep-deprived I had to pause while talking to Adam to remember if the baby was a boy or a girl. And then there are days when I get a longer stretch (say, 3.5 hours of uninterrupted sleep) and I feel like a million bucks.
After awkwardly referring to our newest girl as “the baby” for the past few posts, I’m going to take the plunge and try on her nickname, Blythe. Like with Beatrice, it’s a name close to her heart. The Bee and Bly? Too many Bs? We’ll see how it goes.
Beatrice is still thrilled to have Blythe around, in that over-enthusiastic toddler way. “Baby Blythe sits in my lap!” she demands several times a day, and she is very fascinating by the feeding process, giving my boob a helpful squeeze now and again. (Awkward.)
We are the happy recipients of generosity from our friends and family, feasting on prepared dinners and enjoying snow-plowed sidewalks. Every day is an adventure, as we figure out our new family rhythm and get to know Blythe better. As I walk on these snowy afternoons I wonder who she will become. What kind of person will she be? Will she have dark brown hair like me, or will it go curly, as it’s threatening to do on the sides? Will her eyes stay blue? (Fingers crossed on that one). Will she laugh and run a lot like Beatrice? I can’t wait to find out!
